Emporium-Capwell, The Broadway, Weinstocks, Robinson's-May (formerly Robinson's and The May Co), Lord &Taylor.

Each of these were different stores that served a different niche. One mall I worked at had 5-6 of these anchor stores. As Macy's/Federated consumed them, it replaced one with Macy's west and shut the others down.

The shopping mall is still there, but it's nothing like the wonderful varied shopping Mecca it used to be. One of the anchor stores is Target. The others are Macy's and Walmart.

Choice? What choice? Consumers who go there today have no choice compared to the 1990s shopper.

Yes, some of the department stores I mentioned fell on hard times with the recession of the late 1980s. But being devoured by Macy's pretty much obliterated  middle class department store shopping.

    It's a shame.

So if you get hit by a bus tonight, would you be satisfied with how you spent today, your last day on earth? Live like tomorrow is never guaranteed, because it's not. -- Me.
