Some stuff just can't - and shouldn't - be forgiven. That man is living proof that there is absolutely no depth to which Republicans won't sink in order to win an election. And lest we forget, one reason why Karl Rove's tactics have been so effective is that no matter how many times he pulls them, the Democrats tend to think he wouldn't go any lower than that (when in fact he always has the next time around) or it will disgust the voters and backfire (maybe in some states, but in the Deep South? No.).

Incidentally, the American Taliban's way of dealing with that ad is very informative, if also amazingly depressing. I've seen people try to justify it by reciting the script only, with no mention of the visuals, and argue that it didn't actually say anything that wasn't true (you mean like how it implies that Cleland didn't vote for the Iraq resolution?).

And then there's a more personal anecdote: the single most right-wing individual I know is from Georgia. Although he defended the ad when it was actually running in 2002 (even going so far as to argue that Cleland's injuries were his own fault, something about stowing his grenades improperly), he has since come to claim that he doesn't even remember seeing the ad. As early as 2005, he claimed he'd never seen it and that the liberals were just whining about something that hadn't even been on TV much if at all.

And you know what? I believe him. Oh, I know the ad had plenty of airtime in reality, but I believe this guy honestly doesn't remember seeing it. Why? Because to the real hardcore right wingers, comparing Democrats to terrorists just isn't that big a deal. And neither is Republican chickenhawks attacking the patriotism of Democrats who did serve.

Certaines personnes disent qu'il y a une femme à blâmer, Mais je sais que c'est ma faute sacrément.
