    but the people who would find it insulting are the ones suffering from it, otherwise it's an apt description. I personally like the bubble metaphor. It should be insulting to make people shy away from being like that.

      One of the oft-discussed consequences of conservatives' need for epistemic closure is that they have a tendency to double-down when presented with evidence that runs contrary to their beliefs.  As more facts become available to support the idea of global warming, for example, conservatives become ever more convinced that there is a conspiracy between Democrats and the entire scientific community.  Conservatives are much more sure of this now than they were 20 years ago, when the science was more vague on the topic.

      Insulting them doesn't shame them, or make them reexamine their beliefs.  It just makes them more convinced that the evil liberal coastal elite is viewing them through the patronizing lens of academic study, trying to get inside their heads.  And we are.  But it does no good to tell them that.
