  •  Egypt (0+ / 0-)

has a long history (really long) of leadership in the region, they (and Turkey and Assyria, and Persia) governed the region for centuries, and all feel an affinity for the place and a rightful sense of assertion of regional leadership.  Israel just picked Egypt, astonishing, but true.  They can't go it alone anymore, and there are limits to what the US can do to postpone the inevitable.

      in the region.

I just wonder to what extent--maybe none at all--Egypt has now assumed some measure of responsibility for Gaza and the conflict with Israel.

US presidents for decades have tried to be the middleman, generally with poor results, not only for the conflict in general, but also for US prestige.

I'm probably just a cynic, but something tells me, "hey, Egypt, it's now your problem".
