      Jesus identifies with the character in that parable who speaks those words.

      I'm not claiming that the main lesson of the NT is all these ugly things.  

      I'm just saying that it's invalid to cherry-pick all the violence and "smiting" from the OT, and claim the OT is the gospel of vengeance and the NT is the gospel of forgiveness, while ignoring that the NT can be cherry-picked in the same way.  And you can't deny that there are people who do use Luke 19:27 to show that non-Christians deserve death, and who  do use the "if you do not believe I am he you will die in your sins" passage to show that non-Christians will go to hell.  

      And more broadly, many Christians have argued that Jesus' commandment to believe in him implicitly means believe his apostles too and that therefore denying Paul's doctrine of grace and John's (implicit) doctrine of the trinity and all that other stuff puts you in hell too.  

      But if you cherry-pick, selecting the worst of one, and the best of the other, you can prove anything.
