The OT is no more barbaric than is the NT.

You can call the slaying of the Amalekites barbaric if you wish.  But you also have to call barbaric the view that God had intercourse with Mary, left her a virgin, and made their boy into a god and then tortured him to death so that everybody who believed the story would go to heaven regardless of whether they were good or bad, while everybody who disbelieved the story would get thrown into a perpetual lake of fire.

The problem was not just that OT was used as code for barbarism, but, as the lead of the diary said, that "somehow people of kindness and decency had given [it] up, presumably in favor of the more compassionate 'New Testament'".  In short, that the Jewish bible was not just cruel and violent with respect to modern sensibilities, but also with respect to the Christian one that came after.
