  •  I'm sorry, but that's not entirely true (1+ / 0-)

I am a strong supporter of social welfare programs, but to pretend that there is no fraud involved in it is naive. I have seen it with my own eyes, and it was not because the assistance they were getting was insufficient.

I get very annoyed when people talk about welfare fraud like it's a widespread problem. You are correct that that is a RW meme.

But don't pretend that it never happens, or that it only happens because people aren't getting enough assistance. That's just not true.

    P.S. I am not a crackpot.

    •  From my original post (2 up from the one you're (0+ / 0-)

      responding to):

Here are the facts: A study was done to determine how welfare recipients were able to make it on so little money. Of those studied, there was only one who wasn't somehow supplemented, and she wasn't making it. When the AFDC program came to an end with welfare reform, it was reported that the whole program comprised 1% of the federal budget. So, these (mostly) women are heroes in my eyes. Do they commit fraud? Absolutely. And more power to them! They're survivors, just like Flower.
I received both welfare and food stamps. And then I worked as an eligibility worker for 6 years. It is true that people who defraud the system do it because their benefits aren't sufficient. Because the issue of poverty is much more complex than this discussion, I'll just leave it at that.
      •  I know they are not always sufficient (0+ / 0-)

I'm not arguing that. I am sayin that to believe that is always true in cases of fraud is naive. This is also not a discussion I want to get into either, having the unfortunate experience of having to report an immediate family member for egregious fraud.

I have also been on the receiving end of welfare. I strongly support it and I am adamant about fraud being a very rare occurrence. But it does happen, and not just because its insufficient.

        P.S. I am not a crackpot.
