  •  I don't disagree in theory (19+ / 0-)

but in practice, I think it matters.

If our society didn't care about infidelity, President Clinton's indiscretions wouldn't have mattered.  But rightly or wrongly we do, and as our president, Clinton showed immaturity and insufficient self-control.

Put it this way:  Think of all the political capital Clinton squandered because he didn't keep his willy under wraps.   It's fine to wish that the country hadn't cared, or that the Republicans hadn't been able to make a federal case out of it.  But the reality is that Clinton's presidency was hamstrung by his infidelity, and it likely cost of the presidency in 2000, when Al Gore felt forced to run away from an incredible economic boom.

President Obama could doubtless enjoy the intimate attentions of many women (and men).  In theory, I wouldn't care if he enjoyed them -- so long as his wife didn't mind.  But I'm grateful that our president possesses the maturity and self-control not to act in ways that would undercut his effectiveness as our president.

    •  "Maturity and SELF CONTROL" Thank you! (6+ / 0-)

That is what the faithfulness is about. We all understand we are fallible, knowing that as an adult, how do you handle your life? How do you make decisions? How do you protect what is dear to you or what you decided was dear to you?

said his mother would be most proud of her son for being a good and faithful husband to his wife and a good father to his kids.  He said his mother had many accomplishments in her life but she was so unlucky in love.  He said his mother would have been most happy about how he is devoted to his wife and kids.  That matters to the President and the First Lady a great deal as they both talk about this a great deal in interviews.  So it speaks highly to his maturity, his overall character that he hold his marriage vows to the highest level and takes the job of being a dad very, very seriously as his top priority in life.  I respect that.
