  •  Navajo, can you tell us approx how many heaters (13+ / 0-)

are needed on the reservation, to give us a goal to aspire to?  Is there a number on how many have been purchased so far?

Also, is there a ballpark figure on the cost to cover propane for the winter for a family, and how many families need the help?

    Thank you kindly.

    •  This is hard to answer. Anyone who's been to the (13+ / 0-)

rez understands my response. What you see there is dilapidated house after house, old trailer after trailer. Homes that need to be torn down and rebuilt, sometimes with several families living in them.

This project is for the poorest of the poor. These are people who can't afford a new furnace or they're using ovens or old wood stoves for heat. I've been told the wood stoves have to be fed a couple of times in the middle of the night and so sleep is interrupted.

The need for heaters is constant. With 80% unemployment for decades you can imagine how that impacts a community. We've not kept track of the number we've sent because the first two years these diaries were written in emergency mode.

I'll have to ask Sherry how many tanks it takes to get through a winter. One year someone adopted a family and filled their tank all winter. I'll also ask her if she can estimate the need. She'll likely just say, wow..... with a really long pause before guessing.

      •  Thanks, navajo. One more heater on the way. (3+ / 0-)

A day or so ago there was a program on the PBS station about the Lakota people -- very moving. Glad that we can help.
