  •  Friends and Family (11+ / 0-)

I have seen family members treat other family member in ways they would never imagine treating a friend. Why? Because if a friend was treated like that, the friend would never have anything to do with them again. Once when I was treated (abused, actually) so poorly by a family member, I let it be known that I would not put up with that crap, and would not be attending any more family events if that particular family member was present, unless and until I got a written apology. Five years later, I got such an apology. I again started attending family events. Two years later, the verbal abuse started again, so I just stopped attending the family events. No explanation, no threats, no demand for apologies. I just stopped responding to invitations. After a few more years, other family members approached me asking if there was something they could do. I told them that, while I loved them, there were others in the family that I had decided I had no reason to know, and I would not associate socially with people I could not trust, and did not like. Some people think I am anti-social with regards to some family members. I tell them that I have no shortage of friends, some of whom are family members.

Just because someone is family, it doesn't mean I have to like them.

If I was any more excited, I would almost be apathetic.
