that Hosni Mubarak's handpicked judges were a legitimate check on Morsi's powers as president?

Removing the dictators' judges seems like a good idea to me.

I think that it is only fair to give Morsi a chance to show his hand. If he tries to rule as a despot, he will faith the wrath of the Egyptian people.

He does need to remove the entrenched power elites in the judiciary as well as the military. He deserves some slack, as the first democratically elected leader in over 50 years.

    •  He needs to seat the Legislature, and do it (8+ / 0-)

      within the week.

      Let them pick new Judges.

You're absolutely right that the judiciary was still entirely an organ of the Mubarak Police State (the one the US propped up for 30 years).

But that leaves open the question - is Morsi trying to rectify or exploit the problem?

    •  I missed the part of my post where I wrote a (3+ / 0-)

gushing review of the Egyptian judicial branch.

If the judges need to go, and I think its clear to most folks that they did, getting rid of the judges and replacing them with good judges in a transitional process should have been the solution, not removing the last check on executive power.

the Egyptian military certainly fulfills that role.
