  •  Yeah, that was ugly. (5+ / 0-)

I grew up on the North Side of Chicago.  My parents were "lakefront liberals" as they are known and the amount of hate they and some of their friends encountered during that race was daunting, even at church.  There are, unfortunately, still racist Democrats in that and many other cities.

    •  I have to tell you, that it was also a joyous time (4+ / 0-)

I remember living on the Northside and wearing my blue Washington button and being in a sea of Byrne and Daley buttons, and taking the bus and the train and the train and bus to my job on the West side and seeing the colors change.  We were a happy and joyous bunch south of the Loop, all with our bright blue buttons on, all for our Harold.  One family, even the gang bangers.

It was my proudest election, the same one that Obama cut his teeth on, the one that Axelrod managed.

I remember what Harold said when he was approached by community folks about running.  He said I will only do it if you can register 400,000 new voters.  Because he understood the power rested in the communities of color that did not vote, who had ceded power to the those who had and would oppress us.  We did, and he did.  And part of his legacy is Barack Obama.

Harold was an amazing human being.  Love him, and miss him still.
