are staunch Republicans. They come from several generations of lower-middle-class families in Stark County, Ohio, primarily Massillon. Through my father-in-law's hard work, they managed to move into the soulless suburbs outside North Canton in the 1970s - a place where, incidentally, there are essentially no people of color. We lived just north of Massillon from July 1990 until August 1994, moving to Tennessee at that point for reasons that don't have anything to do with my story.

As we were preparing to move from our house, we held a moving sale, which was "staffed" by my mother-in-law, among several others. We had been accepting checks from untold white shoppers, no questions asked. Sure enough, a black man wanted to write a check for a few items. Mom-in-law required him to produce ID, and then had somebody immediately call the bank listed on his check to ensure he had an account there. I sat stunned watching this unfold. That was 19 years ago, and I'm still ashamed I didn't step in and stop her. I'm also still ashamed of her. And, of course, she will swear upon her family bible that there isn't a racist bone in her body.
