  •  I think it's the aggressive attitude and any (5+ / 0-)

actions that follow which are defining. The object at which aggression is irrationally directed is less important in the sense that the target/object has no practical recourse to intercept or counter the aggression.  Any personal characteristic is essentially immutable. The target can't do anything about it.

Defining a person as a racist or a homophobe or a misogynist does nothing for the victim. It is a useless label and ipso facto dismissive of a meaningful response.  On the other hand, if a person is accused of abuse and found guilty, he can be restrained, if society is so inclined. Sad to say, our culture of obedience tolerates abuse and even goes so far as to permit torture by agents of law enforcement. "Less than lethal" gets a pass and, if the perpetrator has good cause (is frightened for his safety), even a killing can be dismissed.

The U.S. is experiencing an epidemic of spouse abuse, child abuse, animal abuse, prisoner abuse, etc. Dismissing aggression by labeling the perpetrator (racist, rapist, pedophile, terrorist, homophobe) obviously does nothing to stop the abuse. Acts need to be judged on their own, not the intent of the perp.

We organize governments to provide benefits and prevent abuse.

Calling a murderer a murderer is an accurate label, and is necessary in order to prosecute the offense.

Same with racist, even if we don't prosecute.  It may not help the victim, but it helps the offender, in that he may eventually recognize what he has become, and change.

      Change happens, albeit slowly.

        stop the killing.
That the law slices and dices is not a consolation, either.

Frankly, I'm keen to prosecute anyone committing assault, regardless of what s/he's called. "Enhanced interrogation" is assaultive. Torture to extract information is assaultive. It should be stopped.
Don't have much interest in changing hearts and minds after damage has been done.
