    After thoroughly enjoying Lincoln I came home to read up a bit. I saw he had only served out that term, but what happened?

    [note to others: if you are as ignorant about that time period, war and governmental players as I am, you might want to read before you go to the movie. It would have made it a lot easier to follow!]

      Johnson was feuding heavily with the Republicans (particularly the radical wing), who wanted to continue pressuring the South by maintaining military governance and by refusing to seat representatives from those states in Congress.  They passed the Tenure of Office Act, which would have prevented the President from firing certain officials without Senatorial consent (and which was, as gf120581 said, clearly unconstitutional).  Instead of suing, however, he went ahead and fired people anyways, which allowed Congress to impeach him for violating the law.  He was not, however, removed from office- the Republicans failed by one vote in that regard, in the Senate.

        1.  Jan. 2013: There is no deal on debt ceiling.

        2.  Jan. 31, 2013: The date for the debt ceiling comes.

        3.  Jan. 31, 2013: Obama says the debt ceiling law is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment prohibition and ignores deadline, orders Treasury to keep paying debts (" The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.")

        4.  Feb. 2013: House impeaches Obama.

        5.  Mar. 2013: Senate fails to convict Obama 55-45.

        6.  August 2013: Supreme Court decides whether debt ceiling law is constitutional.

        7.  November 2014: Angry Electorate votes out Republicans (I hope!)

        8.  November 2154: Lincoln Schindler Spielberg, great grandson of Steven, makes Obama focusing on the debt ceiling struggle in 2013.

        The GOP: "You can always go to the Emergency Room."
