  •  It requires a rejection of consumption = (4+ / 0-)

happiness, which is deeply instilled in us and reinforced by marketing and virtually universal behavior all around us.

But it's the only way. Reject impulsive, compulsive consumption. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Notice it begins with "reduce".

I'm researching the green shoots in the tiny house and natural building method "movements", for environmental and economic reasons. Give people more options to get out of large homes that require inordinate amounts of resources, toxic materials, burdensome lifelong debt and the soul-sucking quest for the money to afford it and everything else consumable. (In smaller homes, it is also much easier to use renewable resources to supply all of the home's energy needs.)

I'd love a hobbit house, although I'd like the ceilings at least a scooch taller so I didn't have to stoop as I walked around.  I could easily shave a foot or two off each floor of my current home without actually missing it, though.  And rounded surfaces have less surface area than squared off ones, of course, which means less area for heat exchange to occur.
