We may need long term improvements in Social Security and Medicare, but they have nothing to do with the current problem.

If you need to patch a roof on your house, building a new barn doesn't fix your problem. The alleged reforms that the racists Very Serious People are demanding are not fixing the deficit problem and they know it. Krugman rightly mocks the ignorance of economics of the Beltway crowd and the foolishness of their solutions -- particularly since the solutions they demand brought Europe back into recession.

I have no idea why Obama seems so willing to stay quiet on this issue. He needs to watch "Lincoln" a few times. Obama needs to get his hands dirty and needs to call out the Tea Party Racists and their enablers for the harm they will do if they refuse to engage in rational reforms.

People like Saxby Chambliss seem quite willing to believe that they can sacrifice their poor white allies to keep poor blacks from having economic security because the poor whites have shown that they have been bamboozled by the Party of The Rich and Selfish. As long as the GOP continues to betray Lincoln, they will still get votes from poor whites who have let their racism betray their best interests. Eventually, they will die, as will the GOP.

The GOP is the party of mammon. They mock what Jesus taught.

Tell me that in order to avoid SS bankrupts and therefor a cut in benefits in the future we must cut SS benefits RIGHT NOW!

We only think nothing goes without saying.

    •  SS is exactly the problem right now (0+ / 0-)

Excess SS payments finance the tax cuts the wealthy expect to keep going. If the US was to actually keep its SS obligations tomorrow, tax cuts will need to foregone today.
That is why a problem twenty years out is garnering so much attention today.  What other future problem gets so many commissions, hearings, studies and press releases?

These capitalists generally act harmoniously and in concert to fleece the people, and now that they have got into a quarrel with themselves, we are called upon to appropriate the people's money to settle the quarrel. Abraham Lincoln
