But I've often thought of Biden as a potential LBJ if something were to happen to BO.  It would be absolutely terrible, but I would think many people would recoil in horror, possibly opening the door to major, 'great society' type changes.  Don't get me wrong: I truly hope nothing happens to the President, but I do feel the potential for a 60's replay is there.  Fortunately the Secret Service are amazingly good at their job.

George W. Bush was about as safe from assassination as a US President can be.

Johnson used the wave of emotion that came after the assassination to push & pass a slew of bills that Jack Kennedy probably would never have been able to get through Congress. It helped that LBJ was arguably the craftiest politician of the last half of the 20th century, but the public emotion provided much of the motive force.

Liberals hated Dubya for the obscene policies he presided over, but no one identified him as the "evil genius" behind them--in fact most of us considered him nothing more than an aw-shucks sockpuppet for the true "evil genius," his self-selected Veep. IMHO most of us hoped/prayed that Dubya would survive his term(s) because we feared what a President Cheney could & would do surfing such a wave of public emotion.

(As an aside, it is highly possible that Nixon kept Agnew around for his second term as protection against removal from office--he knew no one in her/his right mind would want the former Governor of Maryland running the country. Worked out real well for him IIRC...)

I think that whatever "saner" elements over on the Far Wrong oppose this President on (mostly) policy grounds would dismiss assassination for no better reason than the Biden-as-LBJ scenario. And whatever "saner" elements over there who seethe over a black President would dismiss assassination because of the not-inconsiderable chance that the next credible candidate for the Presidency who happens to be black (& there would be one, sooner rather than later) could well ride the wave of national emotion over his/her predecessor's death right into the White House, recreating the very situation they loathe.

And that leaves the (im)pure "crazies" who just wanna teach "uppity" types a lesson. Fortunately hatred breeds stupidity in the hater, & the greater the hate the deeper the stupid.

It's not a "fiscal cliff," it's a Fiscal Bluff--so why don't we call them on it?

    •  Um...the shit that would hit the fan (0+ / 0-)

on that day would make moving forward as a country pretty much unthinkable in the short term. The more immediate concern would be how to keep the whole thing from blowing the fuck up.

As for me and my family, we would head for the mountains in a hurry. And then the border.
