When the President came to Hollywood, FL on 11/4, my first thought, when I got my ticket and my map was, "It's outside?!?!"

On a high school football field, in the middle of a residential / mixed commercial neighborhood.

We had to go though security, but after we got into the bleachers and were sitting and waiting, we were looking around and from where we were you could see people on top of houses outside the field.  Secret service was in the stadium and we could see them doing their sweeps with the Broward Sherriff's people around the immediate perimeter and it wasn't too long before the people on the roofs started climbing down.

We couldn't see down on the ground, but I'm assuming the BSO must have had every cop in the county and Hollywood had every cop in the city stationed in every yard, every parking lot to keep people off of their own roofs, maybe with police snipers farther back on the farther away roofs where we couldn't see them, but where they could certainly keep an eye on things.

Frankly, I was terrified.  I wanted to see the President but I was wondering what crazy logistics person decided that having this rally outside in such seemingly vulnerable conditions, was a good idea.  While he was speaking, even though I was waving my FORWARD! Sign, I found myself checking the nearby houses to be sure the roofs stayed clear.  So did the group of people who were with me.  The people inside in the bleachers (about 15,000 of us) were more aware than the people in the field (about 8,000 people) because our line of sight was different.  As thrilled as we were to see and hear President Obama, once he left and was safely back in the "Beast" (the bulletproof limo), a whole bunch of us just plopped down in our seats, more in relief than in an adrenaline drop.  All of us, where I was sitting, are old enough to remember 11/22/63 and it's horrible that that day was on our minds so much, it didn't exactly put a damper on our day, but it certainly overshadowed our outright excitement and joy, more than I expected.

Maybe it's just our age, maybe it's because we're really aware of what this good man faces every day just because of his skin color.  The younger people around us didn't think about it until one of us said something about the people on the roofs.

I pray for the President's safety every day, and I'm not much of a praying person, but it's been on my mind every day since the McCain rallies got out of hand in 2008... No other candidate has faced the kind of threats President Obama faces... And I get really freaked out when I hear the secret service has agents who have done something stupid and get suspended - we need more of them working to protect the President, not less.

"Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential." - Barack Obama
