    this isn't exactly a nuanced right-wing libertarian concept... it is explicitly called out in Art II that state legislatures control their own elections.

    It would be very hard legally, not even touching upon politically or realistically, to try to force federal standards on that with any kind of enforcement.

      but I still think it would be more fair to voters to have clear and consistent procedures.

        If the federal govt provided funding for elections then they would be allowed to attach strings to that money.  This is how we get national standards for other explicit state-rights issues like education and highways.

        The fact that states could opt out of the federal money and then run their own elections as they saw fit would be enough to preserve the constitutionality since submitting to the standards is a voluntary act.

      Article II, Section 4, 1st paragraph:

      The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.
