    If it's a true national holiday, absentee ballots don't get delivered in time because the post office doesn't deliver. The courts are closed, so if there's a problem you have no way to challenge it before the polls close. State offices like the Secretary of State and AG are closed.

    It's highly tempting, but also highly problematic.

    In NH, where it was a state holiday, we (ACLU) had to make a special agreement with the Secretary of State, the AG election law person, and the court system, to have people available including a couple of judges, to handle problems such as (true story) a town clerk refusing to accept a passport instead of a birth certificate as proof of age & citizenship for same-day registration.
