  •  Ricks has an article in The Atlantic (5+ / 0-)

which is the short version of his new book--which specifically details how generalship in Iraq/Afghanistan is wholly incompetent and entirely different from how we did it in WWII--when it really mattered to get it right.  (Not that is does not matter now, but when you are really dealing with an actual Hitler, it matters a bit more...)

You may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife, and you may ask yourself, "How did I get here?"

    •  To be blunt: Afghanistan is a Tracking War. (1+ / 0-)

Raiding parties go out and the problem for the central/government/town forces is to be able to track them down, then back-track to where they came from.

We have fought these wars before. Against Apache, Comanche, the Philippine rebels most famously.

      In Afghanistan ????

There's absolutely minimal effort at running a serious tracking operation.

They never, ever do back-tracking. And the few dogs out in the field are great looking Belgian Malinois sheep dogs, that resemble small shepherds. No bloodhounds. Zero.

Since we're fighting the wrong war, we're losing.
