  •  "Latinos" are heterogeneous (0+ / 0-)

    "Latinos are strongly Catholic"

This is not universally true. The Bronx, which is now majority Hispanic (a term generally preferred here to Latino) is full of storefront Protestant churches, while the Archdiocese is consolidating parishes and schools.

There is a social issue/economic issue divergence. Consider the case of NY State Sen. Ruben Diaz, Sr., from the Bronx. He is a Democrat (in fact there are zero Republican elected officials here, and the Bronx voted 91% to 8% for Obama). He is the leading opponent of abortion and gay marriage in the NY Senate. But on economic issues he is the most left wing Senator in Albany. He represents his constituents accurately. The Republicans will never allow someone like Diaz to get nominated for national office, so they will continue to lose elections.
