      •  It is getting some attention tho not much yet (3+ / 0-)

        - it is more than the last 2 reps against the war who posted diaries here and were pretty much ignored. That made me so sad.

Ending the Afghanistan war now, not in 2 more year, only makes sense. The country we have to rebuild is our own.

Afghanistan existed for centuries without the USA - and can again just without billions of dollars of money needed here to stop the implosion of our country. Like other poor countries they have become accustomed to all those American dollars, as if we are a wealthy country still, but they  want to keep the money flowing.  At least the politicians do.

I read a report today in an Afghanistan newsite that the money pretty much stays with the politicians. So much for helping the Afghan people, but that was never the reason for the war anyway. Those reasons have come and gone, and here we are now in the 12 th year of war there, mired down with the hope that some good things will start the country down the right path so that we might be able to leave in 2 more years. There is no other plan that I know of other than waiting 2 more years to leave and I do not understand that.

4 years after Bush left the WH and after 50 Billion dollars alone spent on training the Afghans, and we're still there, troops still fighting and dying, Afghans still dying, death and destruction and what do we have to show for it? What are we still doing there and why are we letting the politicians off the hook who keep funding this war, whether Repub or Dem?

I assume you saw the 10K troops left in Afghanistan after 2014 story today.  How many mercenaries? How many special ops and CIA?  I wonder if we will get any kind of answer to that.

This means that we are not leaving Afghanistan after 2014 as the president promised the voters all throughout his campaign.  They might designate them as trainers, but they will be fully outfitted for combat and will still be subject to green on blue attacks, and there is no way that they will just leave 10K troops there.  How many mercenaries?  Will there be more "over the horizon"?  Will we have attacked Iran by then or some other country in the region?

Yes, I read GoGo's diary first and then researched throughout the day for other news. I don't know if another report on the number of mercs has been made or if Rep. Lee is responding to questions, tho someone did when I asked for names of the other reps asking for quicker withdrawals and said she would get list later or tomorrow.

Who knows for the CIA? or special ops? Accountability from the most open - most transparent administration ever seems not to be so open or transparent, does it?

If the president does not plan on actually ending the war, then why doesn't he just come out and say so?

He will not be running for re-election, so he won't have to lie about it if it is to be the case that troops will remain and that combat missions will be fought alongside the Afghans for years to come?

I am sick to my soul weary of this seemingly endless war, being mired down there and the death and destruction now in its second decade, with billions of dollars to just keep it going on and on, joanne.

And a nation mostly sits back compliantly waiting and waiting, believing in the president words that he is ending the war but without details on how or even announcing any new troop withdrawals.
