  •  Even worse than Santorum aught 6 (3+ / 0-)

was the fact they hand-picked Lynn Swann to be the challenger to Philtharendellphia. Swann was always going to lose, but he was supposed to draw out the stupids to vote for a former Steeler in the western half of the state.

It didn't work. lost by 20

You can trust me to be objective, I've been attacked by both sides.

    •  Yeah, Swann was pretty awful (6+ / 0-)

I knew he was screwed when I saw him do this interview with George S. and completely botched his answer on Roe vs. Wade. (He thought if it was overturned, abortion would be outlawed; when told it would revert back to a state by state decision, he was flabbergasted.) Once I saw that I thought, "Ed Rendell is going to eat him alive." And he did.

Still, Swann was a neophyte politician who had no idea what he was doing. Up against a savvy politician like Rendell, losing by 20 was no surprise. Santorum, on the other hand, was a two term senator of considerably national standing and was a member of the GOP leadership in the Senate (Conference Chair, the #3 job in the caucus and reputedly being groomed by Rove for the top job - I guess Frist wasn't weak and stupid enough for them). A two-term senator, even with his baggage, getting blown out by 18 points is utterly humiliating.
