  •  Exactly. It usually is a case of over-eager guard (24+ / 0-)

rather than a specific policy by an employer.....this could have happened in a number of places.

    •  I dissagree ... (11+ / 0-)

what the heck kind of "dime store" hires an army of "Blackwater" washouts to protect $50 worth of consumables?

Seriously ... short of carrying out a flat of 72 inch flat screens, what the heck kind of "loss" justifies a force of ENABLED and EMPOWERED (by that very same company) rent-a-cops to use physical violence to "detain" a shoplifter - and that these same knuckle draggers have no qualms about using a "choke hold" to do it?

Which most "legitimate" police forces have outlawed BTW.

There are ways to deal with shoplifters - and considering the average wallyworld has more cameras than a standard Vegas casino, video evidence and proper legal action are no stretch for this billion dollar company to pursue.

This is typical for them - delusional to think otherwise.

If not us ... who? If not here ... where? If not now ... when?

and I don't understand this comment:

        an army of "Blackwater" washouts
Is this in reference to lgmcp's comment about the BIL's brother who was a "hair trigger ex Marine"?  You do realize that the vast majority of people don't appear to be "hair trigger" when they go on job interviews, right? And in general, former military tend to be MORE disciplined than other young men and women?

This employer should be commended for hiring former military especially after wartime service.

If you're referring to someone else as a "Blackwater washout," I apologize for misunderstanding. Please clarify what exactly you meant by this. I'm curious indeed.

as I did not say veterans at all.

This is about a chain of discount stores hiring a militaristic security force that uses demonstrably lethal force in order to protect marginally priced merchandise, and a shot at the apologists as well.

I did not mention veterans, nor was there any reason to draw that conclusion, as the essence of this story has nothing to do with that - a "washout" is just that.

And from this story - the story of a death, over something as meaningless as a hundred bucks worth of junk - the best you can come up with is a "commendation"?

Wallyworld will hire anyone, veteran or no - as long as they are willing to work for nothing - save your commendations for companies that deserve it.

          •  Ah. You do realize that Blackwater/Xe/ (0+ / 0-)

Academi hires pretty much exclusively former military?

So you understand that the term "Blackwater washouts" would seem to imply ipso facto veterans?

I just want to be clear that we don't disparage returning veterans even by unintended implication here. They have a hard enough of a time finding jobs. President Obama and veterans groups have  done an amazing job getting what was an obscene veterans unemployment rate down. But I'll always jump in to ask questions when issues seem to come up -- just for clarification.

            Thanks for clarifying.

        •  He was jumpy, trust me on that (0+ / 0-)

and somewhat on the hyper-vigilant side still to this day.  Also highly intelligent and all these decades later, very successful.  But he would be the first to tell you he was very reactive at that time.  I understand his take-down of the thief was fast, hard, and effective -- but completely against the manual he had signed on orientation day.

... about security firms that offered "armed response" as an option if a burglar alarm they had installed was triggered:

If it comes right down to it, who do I really want in my house: some kid looking for a few things to sell for the drug money, or some guy with an arsenal who wants to prove that his Section 5 from the Army was a bum rap?
    •  I disagree that this could have happened anywhere (4+ / 0-)

      but at Walmart.

Although the "official" training is pretty standard, (don't touch the shoplifter, call police, etc), the overall "vibe" from store management is that as an employee you better make it your business to stop shoplifters or it will cost you your job.

That is why Walmart employees often go "overboard", they feel that their jobs are at stake.

    •  Agree... (0+ / 0-)

Lots of things go into someone dying from an altercation.  Persons health, over zealous guards, and all sorts of stuff.
