  •  I agree-- why so confrontational? (10+ / 0-)

When I worked retail back in the '80's, bosses always told us that our lives were worth more than the merchandise, and that we were never supposed to try to physically stop shoplifters.

Remember, people are not criminals if they are suspected of stealing. They are suspects! They are innocent until proven guilty. Reasonable security measures don't involve grabbing or choking suspected thieves.

Seems to me we want the retail store employees to be untrained police, judge, jury and executioner. Dirty Harry behind the register. For minimum wage, yet.

Non-profit single payer health care. Next question?

    •  I was told the exact same thing (8+ / 0-)

I worked in retail from 2001 through half of 2006. I was also told that the dangers inherent in trying to apprehend a possible shoplifter were just not worth it. I was also told it was dangerous because if we accidentally hurt the customer, the company could get sued.

I do remember that there were some young male employees who used to talk about wanting to tackle anyone who tried to steal from us, but I always made sure to make it clear that that was not what we did.

Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh to-day as when they first passed through their authors' minds ages ago. - Samuel Smiles
