    One of the differences between applying restraint techniques as an athlete and applying them as a security professional is that the latter has to assume that it's entirely possible that the person they're restraining has a medical condition.

    Sports leagues generally require medical clearance for competitors, and leagues that practice potentially-dangerous techniques usually have trained first responders present in case something does go wrong.

    Working civilian security, on the other hand, you run into people with heart/respiratory conditions all the time, and you usually don't have a fully-supplied EMT on the scene with you. Different standards of caution apply - things like chokeholds and face-down holds can and do kill people.
