  •  It was a busy 5 days over Thanksgiving with my (8+ / 0-)

Niece- in-law and my 3 great-nephews ages 7, 4-1/2, & 3 in San Diego. The weather was nice but who had time to notice :-)

The weird part was coming home (a day late due to a cancelled flight) and knowing there wasn't really anyone who cared where I was. Ok, ok, I know my best friend texted me later that afternoon but it's not like having your other half waiting for you, y'know?

    •  Oh, I'm glad you were with family. (9+ / 0-)

      Good family, sounds like.

I was doing fine—better than fine, even—through most of the holiday, which I spent with friends. Then I got home yesterday, and it hit me. Hard. It's been three years since I've seen him. Three years since that Friday after Thanksgiving when we held each other for the last time.

And now we're heading into the goddamned holiday season, when all my friends with families will send those goddamned holiday cards with pictures of their kids, all smiling and happy and "Look at our family and the life you're never gonna have!" and god, I just want that to be over already. (First one arrived today, in fact.) Is it January yet?

      •  Oh kid, how tough for you (5+ / 0-)

I didn't realize the day after Thanksgiving was the last time you saw him. I wish I had better words to offer to you.

This year for me too the holidays have a peculiar hollow ache to them; a sense of "these holidays are not for me any more" since there is no one person to witness them together with me. It is a very otherworldly feeling. Hugs to you.
