    winsock.dll.  Nice catch.  I used the name "winsock" back in the mid 90s when IRC was becoming popular.  If you were running Windows 3.0 or 3.1 and desired free internet access, good chance the trumpet winsock icon was resting on your desktop.

        Of course eventually some people went to using AOL.  AOL charged an hourly fee until the mid 90s.  Ugh.

        I remember having to make long distance calls to reach the nearest ISP for internet access.  It definitely wasn't as easy or cheap as it is now (nor as fast).  But it was an improvement over the old BBS.
