That wing was still the Democratic party. That demographic didn't leave the Democrats until Nixon. That's when the party splintered and Nixon instituted the Southern Strategy. That's when a lot of whites moved Republican, especially as Democrats kept taking Republican bait and solidifying a perceived reputation of being in favor of minorities over working class whites.

walked out of the DNC in 1948 and officially became a GOOPER in 1964.

Wallace's voters left the Democratic Party at the Presidential level in 1968 and became the so-called Reagan Democrats by 1980.

That Reagan opened his 1980 Presidential campaign in Philadelphia MS should disabuse anyone of the notion that Reagan did not make appeals to the baser instincts in order to win the Presidency.

Harry Truman desegregated the armed forces in 1948. That's when the Southern racists started moving over to the GOP. The 1965 voting rights act (put into place by another Democrat Lyndon Johnson) pushed more of them over to the GOP. By the time Nixon came along with his "Southern strategy" a lot of Southern working class whites had left the Democratic party already - those that were still registered as Democrats voted for third party candidates like George Wallace.
