  •  Tee hee! Google, you are a card! (20+ / 0-)

That is pretty funny - I'll bet whoever programmed it (or whatever it is they do) had a good laugh to themselves.

Why anyone "liked" him will forever be a mystery to me.

He and his annoying mug are receding into the misty mists of my memory, thankfully.

    •  it's an auto correct function of Google, (6+ / 0-)

when a word you type in a phrase that  almost matches a search that is high usage.

      LIKES - LIES

Google thought someone dropped an extra K into the word "lies" accidently, because so many searches for "Mitt Romney, lies" have been used within the recent past.

Thus Google offers you the option of searching for the term Google thought you might actually be looking for. Sadly, even for myself, too often that Google offer is the term I am looking for.

      D'oh.

Personally, I love that about Google. I use it all the time to quickly find how to spell a word I'm stumbling over. I just type in a guess at Google and presto, it finds me the word I want with correct spelling! Now "looking up a word" doesn't require me to already know how to spell it.

          as a spectacularly good speller.

I even tried to start a SpellingNazi™ routine here, once, a long time ago. It didn't go over well, as one might imagine.

Thus, my self-flagellation over finding out the actual status of my spelling skills via the Google...

          :)

      •  Well, that's much less fun (0+ / 0-)

But it does make sense.  Still, as you say, it's probably because people have been looking up lots of "Mitt Romney + lies".  Which in itself says a lot!

Viz:  what you described below about spelling, and which I like to think of as "Spelling FAIRY" or "Grammar MUSE".  It's not annoying - it's helpful.  Hee.
