  •  my older daughter sometimes came to work with (13+ / 0-)

    me when she was little. There were always a couple of people asking for money at Union Station, my metro stop for work and I always gave them a little. But my daughter was worried about one guy so we bought him a bagel and cream cheese. He loved it! another time I was about to eat scrambled eggs & toast I had just bought and I saw one of the homeless guys carefully unwrapping a candy bar and breaking off a little piece for his breakfast. So I gave him my scrambled eggs.
    I know a lot of the homeless are alcoholics and people say that the money you give them just goes for booze, but:
    1) the people I've given food to were happier than the people I've given money to;
    2) maybe some are alcoholic but they also need food; and
    3) I always think -- what if I were starving on the street and everyone passed me by because they assumed I was just a drunk.
