  •  I think that Italians operate in overdrive (0+ / 0-)

most of the time so it would be harder to feel an emotion stronger than the usual swings. I say this as a second-generation Italian American; well really Sicilian American-its not quite the same thing. The language isn't even the entirely the same in Sicily. It is something like the difference between American English and Australian English.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia".

    •  I thought about it... and thought that the country (0+ / 0-)

is so long that the Italians in the north may balance out the more southern, or Sicilian, Italians??  The country is really different from north to south.  (As a child I lived in Ostuni for a couple of years, which is located in se Italy, in the heel of the boot.)

On a personal note, dad was sent TDY to Sicily one time.  While there, he managed to talk a local guy into selling him the 'tail gate' of his cart to dad.  I just love that piece of art!!  It's of a monk trying to pull his donkey along the road and the tail of the donkey is being pulled by the devil.
