  •  To push workers down... (8+ / 0-)

...Maslow's hierarchy of human needs. The last thing the robber barons want is a bunch of self actualized workers. When your most pressing needs are food and basic shelter, you are more likely to accept slave wages and sweatshop conditions (see China), and be less concerned with health insurance, pensions, and, God forbid, unions. People who are living hand to mouth are more pliable and obedient.

Many Republicans live in denial of the fact that they are part of the middle class, as if their political affiliation somehow offsets their financial reality. I don't think they understand that the gap between middle and upper class is much wider and harder to breach than that between middle and lower class.

I know lots of Republicans who are middle class, probably upper middle class. Many small business owners. Whenever I hear them talk like aristocrats or spout Republican talking points I just say, "You do realize that at the end of the day, all they want is your vote, right? You are not part of their club and they really don't give a rat's ass whether you live or die. And by the way, once they put the working class in its place, you're next." I don't get invited to as may parties as I used to.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Then the kleptocrats have to hope their carefully cultivated security apparatus can keep the upper hand (see: Syria?), or that they've got a nice offshore stash and a perfect subtropical escape all set up, just a quick skim away on their personal jets...

Same story, over and over. Humans are a failed species. We can't control ourselves. The limbic system RULES!
