  •  Gore's great cause--fighting the climate crisis-- (0+ / 0-)

cannot currently be accomplished within the bounds of our highly compromised political system.

That's why he didn't run for president in 2008 and it's why he won't get back into politics at the moment. There's no point in him returning to politics unless it's the presidency, and there's no point in him being president unless the political system is so drastically changed that an environmentalist president would have the necessary popular support to overcome the enormous financial power of the fossil fuel-garchy.

Two thirds of the entire United States was in a drought this past year.

Blistering heat in the US has destroyed 45% of the corn and 35% of the soya bean crop in the worst harvest since 1988
This will cause a huge rise in food prices, possibly precipitating a massive economic crisis.

Not a word said about this by either of the two major presidential candidates until Sandy forced the climate change discussion back onto the national radar, however imperfectly. That is the best our political system can do--silence.

Nothing is going to happen in Doha, and we all know it. They are going to meet, produce a vaguely worded document which sets some indefinite targets and promising to meet again in a couple years, and then go home after enjoying some gourmet meals and imbibing plenty of liquor.

That's why Gore is working outside the system, because right now it's too rotten and choked with fossil fuel money for anything to get done.
