  •  Loved how they thought they could shoot it down (5+ / 0-)

with the same old (lame) BS, and she very nicely rebutted with rational arguments.

For those who can't watch the video, here is the jist:

Paraphrasing, after Senator Gillibrand's excellent, fact-filled introduction of the amendment.

SLOWBURN - "Listen honey, I'll work with you across the aisle. And if you come over here with me, RIGHT NOW, into a back room for an hour, we'll find something we can cut to pay for your little amendment."

"I applaud my colleague's big, soft-hearted concern for our military families. But we've spent too much on our military families already."

GILLIBRAND - "Thank you for your support, Senator. I'd be happy to work with you to reform TRICARE and I think it deserves more than an hour of our time."

MCPAIN - "It's so important. I really feel for these children.  But if we pay for it now, we'll be stuck paying for it forever.  And that's pretty sneaky of the Senator from New York.  We can't be stuck with this forever!!!"

MCPAIN - waving arms, pacing and scowling, slightly raising his voice - "My colleague SLOWBURN has a right to a 2nd Amendment to replace her little amendment. It's his right to take her in the back room and straighten her out (and then take credit for it)."

GILLIBRAND - "Thank you for your support, Senator. This little $45 million request is only a commitment for 1 year. Out of a budget of $174 billion. But it is only an estimate, so that we can begin to set up treatment and assess what meeting MINIMUM standards of care will actually cost going forward. [You know, so we can BUDGET for it]. The commitment is only for ONE YEAR."
