    to giving up things the other side very much wants without having gotten real concessions from them in return.

    His concept of negotiation has to all appearances been to offer something he thinks a handful of Republicans would jump at, thus getting the much-desired "bipartisanship" and the warm fuzzy feeling of "working together to solve things."  And so far he's kept trying that despite abundant evidence that no congressional Republican deals in good faith.

      ...if he'd taken the advice given by his base in 2010, not 1/2 way through 2011. But seemingly on the track now it looks good if he makes the GOP compromise about 2/3's of the time. After all, the people have decreed since 2010 that the GOP only possess 1 part of the legislative branch and not the executive office since 2008. The ratio of compromise is clear.
