twelve years in the wilderness with Reagan/Bush.  Then equally disastrous butterfly ballot got us eight years in hell with Bush the Lesser.

    •  Carter should have resisted the rescue attempt. (0+ / 0-)

He knew it would involve the loss of some hostages' lives, but he caved to the pressure for a rescue.

      •  Would appear so with 20/20 retrospectoscope, but (0+ / 0-)

What if he had been successful with minimal loss of life?

And the fact that they were eventually freed sans rescue is not determinative because of the election and the consequences that had on Iran's decision-making.

I was following the events closely and was proud of Carter that he resisted the pressure to ACT, preferring to negotiate and save all the hostages' lives. I was disappointed when he waffled and agreed to a rescue which was expected to end in the loss of as many as a third of the hostages, or so I read at the time.
