Especially the comments under Yahoo news articles, seem to attract those same kinds of people. I used to scroll down to read them, but finally realized that they are always these same sick, bullying types that, no wonder what the subject of the article is, even things not remotely related to politics or issues that could be construed as political, have to turn it into a name-calling attack on liberals and/or Obama. In my mind, reading them was a form of self-torture best not inflicted.

Recently, however, there was an article about Obama gifting Boehner with a bottle of wine for his birthday, and the reporter said that the cost of the wine at some local store was over the limit for a present a congressman was allowed to accept. So of course the wingnuts were going ballistic in the comments section, speculating merrily that Obama was finally going to get nailed for breaking a law.

I tossed a brief comment into the fray that, since Obama has his own brewery at the White House, maybe the bottle of wine was from his wine cellar and it cost way less when he originally bought it, since it was more than 10 years old. So a wingnut bully wrote a rude comment back, saying, "The law is based on the current price, fool!" My point had simply been that if you had something sitting around for more than a decade, you may not be aware of how much it's appreciated in value.

His tone irked me--apparently you can't have any kind of civil conversation with these people--but instead of reciprocating in kind, with juvenile name-calling, I thought for a little while how I could really get his goat back. Then I wrote back, "Well, if that's the case, let's hope Boehner gets in big trouble for not having checked on the value of the wine before accepting it." Boy did they go ballistic over that one! I may as well have thrown a grenade into the mix. Hee hee hee! Mission accomplished!

    •  back in the day I used to love Usenet news groups (3+ / 0-)

but before you knew I think every last group I was involved was swamped by jerks and trolls.

You see that same mentality displayed on every site that has comments on their stories, no matter how serious the topic is.

You Tube comments used to mystify me. How, for example does a video of say a cute kitty with a puppy and a bunny produce nothing but snotty remarks about each other's culture, religion, political views and taste in pop music?

On every last video of anything?

I always wanted to call their mothers to squeal on them or to send them to the vice principal's office.
