    The threshold number is based not just on earned income, but rather on "modified adjusted gross income" (MAGI), so it can affect retirees as well, since it includes pensions, taxable social security income, taxable dividends, capital gains and so forth.  The rules are complicated.

    Retired seniors who are living from pension, social security, and are drawing down from their IRAs or other savings to help out children who are in college or who are struggling financially after completing college may well find themselves in this situation.
