  •  Hmmmmm maybe the President should (12+ / 0-)

talk about reforms by raising the payments out to Social Security, putting more money into the economy.

You can't make me believe many people on Social Security would do anything but spend the money immediately, thus improving the economy.

Also, maybe higher unemployment payments---same results.

Or maybe, payments to states to raise welfare payments.

Or maybe, raising the minimum wage to, oh, $11 or $14 per hour.

Pay for it all by going back to Eisenhower's top marginal rates.  And by extra charges for fast trades on Wall Street.

Don't like what was offered?   How about this?

Because that would decrease the number of years the system is considered "solvent", and not every senior on Social Security would spend it right away. I can say for sure that my grandfather wouldn't.

I don't support means testing Social Security but I don't think it should be making extra payouts regardless of need. I know we need some short-term stimulative spending, but I am concerned about having to pay it back with growing interest. The way I see it, the bigger debt we run up, the less money there will be for important programs in the future, since interest on the debt will eat up a bigger and bigger share of the budget.

      •  That was my least favorite of the bunch. (0+ / 0-)

But, Social Security is a bunch healthier when we have a strong economy and nearly full employment.

Mostly these are to get under the Rethug's skin.   Let them whine about a few more things.
