I read articles like this because I like to be informed.  Scratch that, I need to be informed.

I recycle.  I went vegetarian.  I moved to a house in an old part of the city so I can walk to things I like to do on a daily basis.  I work from home.  I keep the house cool in winter and on the warm side in the summer.  I'll be getting the place insulated with cellulose, and have more efficient storm windows installed.  I started wondering what the point of doing the right thing was, or as one of my friends says, in reference to his cars with V8s, "why should I unilaterally disarm?".  But, I prefer to do the right thing, so I do the right thing.  And now, I have a kid on the way.  I sure don't feel good about that.  It seems almost criminal to bring an innocent into this disaster.

Thanks for the good information.  And I do mean that sincerely.

... is unilaterally disarming himself by failing to armor up on the things that will protect him from weather extremes and the increasing cost of energy.

You are the one arming yourself against the changes in the climate and energy costs.

Twenty-five thousand reasons.  Save 300 gallons of gas/year, and you save about $1000/year at current prices.  Keep a close eye on the thermostat (down to 60 when you leave the house) and you save $250/year.  Continue for 20 years, and you're at 25,000 reasons.

If only I could gather the courage to give up my car, whose insurance and depreciation cost me a sixth of what I take home.  Too bad it takes a bus change and almost two hours to get to work.
