  •  Another way to look at this (0+ / 0-)

is that almost every year emissions increased by MORE than the entire output of a fully developed Alberta Tarsands.

Which nicely illustrates just how idiotic those who go around saying that minutia like that (and the Keystone pipeline) constitute a "game over" scenario.

Applying Occam's Razor, you'd have to conclude they're making all that noise to distract us from a much bigger problem . . . .

    •  I think there's miscommunication (0+ / 0-)

The game over statement was about the full exploitation of the tar sands. Of course, exploitation of coal is the elephant in the room.

I proudly protested against the Keystone XL pipeline at the White House. If we succeeded in protecting the Nebraska sand hills, we won a great victory. I doubt that we did anything but delay the construction of the pipeline and by itself it is not game over.

look for my eSci diary series Thursday evening.

      •  That's what I'm talking about (0+ / 0-)

full exploitation of the tar sands constitutes only about 1% of global carbon emissions.

Sure, it's idiotic and should be stopped.

But having done that, one year's increase will be 2% instead of 3% and (without addressing demand) the skyrocketing emissions will barely notice.

        •  That´s why (0+ / 0-)

the Kevin Anderson talk, referenced above, says a "planned economic recession" is needed to make any significant dent in the emissions trajectory.

I wish this assessment would get wider play. People will need to come to terms with that. And especially, leaders will have to think about how such a thing can be done.

The 08´09 recession - the "Great Recession" burned in everyone´s memories -  just halved the growth rate for a year or two. Not more - not even a zeroing. That gives a taste for the scope of what´s required.
