There are a lot of teachers in my family, and I used to be a pastor, so I know all too well what you mean. So many kids who are already struggling uphill before they've even begun. It's one of the saddest things to deal with, day in and day out. I can't help but think it's a major factor in the high burnout rate for teachers.

And yet, I can think of a good handful of kids who beat the odds. Kids who found some good friends, decided to work hard to break out of the hole their circumstances had dug for them, and made a better life for themselves, bit by bit. And every one of those kids had one vital factor: one or two generous, dedicated teachers who went the extra mile to make sure a promising young person got at least some of the breaks s/he needed.

My heart hurts knowing what you and so many other teachers must contend with to give your students a fighting chance. But I'm incredibly happy, and proud, and grateful that you all are there and in the fight. I know it doesn't always feel like it, but a good teacher can make all the difference. Thank you for caring about your kids.
