  •  Walking Dead is a splendid series, T-Dog didn't (8+ / 0-)

seem to have much to do, but I think the Merle/T-Dog interaction from Season 1 (T-Dog drops the keys down the drain pipe, leaving Merle the racist to an awful fate) is the key to the third season.

I don't agree that Tyrese was necessarily subservient to Carl -- IMHO he was just trying to get things smoothed out a bit after a very hard time.

By the way, the best role for a black man (but briefest) in the series was that of Morgan Jones, played by the wonderful English actor Lennie James.  I wish they'd figure out a way to bring him back.

It does seem to me the series is more concerned with the role of men, and in particular white men, in a world where they are no longer the masters.  Herschel is a good example of this.  Notice that the strong white men (Herschel, Merle, and the Governor) have to suffer substantial physical injury to bring them down, or a hell of a lot of killing (Shane).

Everybody likes Glenn, he doesn't seem to have a dark side, contrast him with the two Korean characters from Lost who were both given extensive and troubling pasts.

One other observation, and that is that in the all-time classic, Night of the Living Dead, the lead was played by Duane Jones, a black actor in a really compelling role.

You have exactly 10 seconds to change that look of disgusting pity into one of enormous respect!

manhood in peril. who is the only person to kill themselves? a nameless black female character? interesting no? especially given that in the comic  the suicides (attempts) are by another central character and several peripheral ones.

      •  You should try actually watching the show. (3+ / 0-)

If the "nameless black female character" you are referring to was the woman who stayed behind and got blown up at the CDC, her name was Jackie, I believe (cuz yeah, she had a name). And she died holding hands with white male Dr. Jenner who also committed suicide.

And on several occasions the group has come across white suicide victims (walker hanging in a tree, murder/suicide family in farmhouse from 1st or 2nd episode).

        Your straw man is weak.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
