    ..America's love affair with guns is not necessarily rational. For many, owning a gun is like breathing. They grew up with guns, learned how to shoot early, like hunting, and perhaps believe they will someday need to protect against the guvmint taking their guns. It's a cultural thing, especially for many southerners. I just think if you're going to own a gun(s), you should also be willing to jump some hoops -- go through background check, register ballistics, use some sort of lock, and accept the consequences of misusing a gun. That's the big problem -- nowadays people think owning a gun confers the right to use it anytime, anywhere (in your neighborhood against kids with hoodies, at a gas station to get someone to turn down their music).
