    First this is a great post and great point.

    Second - the same argument holds elsewhere.  You want to run for governor in Virginia in 2013?  What are you going to do to retake the state house?  You want to run for governor in Florida or Pennsylvania in 2014?  What are you going to do to retake the state house?  

    It's easy to get lost in the top of the ticket races, but without the state houses we do not control districting.  Without control of the congress or the state houses we cannot get legislation through.  Controlling the executive alone is a defensive position because we can veto things, but if the state legislature refuses to pass anything other than a heavily republican skewed budget, and your choice as governor is veto and shut the government down or sign it - then that governorship is not worth but so much on defense.  The federal government will function with no budget, the states not so much.
