    The Meiji emperor was one of of the strongest-willed reformers in the world but then his successor, the Taisho emperor, reads like he may have been on the autistic spectrum - I wonder if anyone's ever researched that.  Then, of course, everyone knows about the Showa emperor.

    I wonder if we'll ever really know what happened at the end of WW2.  The popular story in Japan is that the bombings shocked the Showa emperor into forcing the military's hand and into surrendering; others say that some (but not all) military officers realized that a land invasion of Japan would lead to the Soviets seizing Hokkaido and immense suffering in Kyushu and forced the emperor's hand.  The Household Agency pretty jealously guards those things so I don't know if we'll ever know with certainty, and there's some that believe that the Agency still wields enormous power over the family.

    I really do wonder if we'll ever know.  Still, it's fascinating to see the relationship of the present Emperor with the people of the country.  It's very different from most European monarchies.
