was Bendectin, which was taken off the market soon after I had my daughter because of a supposed link to birth defects.  That link was disproven, and the drug returned to the market.

    •  It's back in Canada, but not in the US. (6+ / 0-)

The link was conclusively disproven indeed, and in Canada the drug is available under the name Diclectin.  In the US there was a movement to bring back Bendectin a few years ago, but the anti-science fear-and-litigation machine started to crank up the threats and things went nowhere.

You can homebrew Bendectin by taking doxylamine succinate (Unisom) and pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) simultaneously -- that's what got me through the first trimester of one of my pregnancies, on the advice of my OB.

But not many people know about or use the homebrew, and as Bendectin use plummeted in the US, hospitalization for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy skyrocketed.  (Scroll down at the link for a chart.)

I wish we'd learn to take science seriously in this country.

      •  My partner took Bendectin for her first (0+ / 0-)

pregnancy.  Her son ended up with striped teeth, which was considered the least severe likely side effect.
